Avid fans of the original “Eclipse” will balk at the diversion but we applaud Mount Gay for looking to go further rather than rest on “good enough”. The rum was tasty and is good in cocktails and alone in a glass as a sipper. The confusion comes in with re-blending the brand.
If this newer blend was released under a new title, it wouldn’t suffer the consequences of being compared against its older sibling but when you pour a new flavor from the old bottle, people are going to talk. As a sipping rum, the new Mount Gay Rum Black Barrel is a marked improvement over the old and well worth a new investigation by those looking for a good rum.
