Depending on how far back you want to look into this rum’s pedigree, once upon a time the Havana Club rums were indeed a Cuban rum.  With the rapid political changes, one party fled to Europe, another to Puerto Rico, and the name stuck around because it was known as a good recipe.

Havana Club Anejo Clasico is a Puerto Rican rum, distilled under similar conditions as the original and clearly marked on the bottle to identify itself as such so as not to confuse anyone.  The rum is a perfectly fine sipper, a great mixer and is worthy of a trial bottle simply due to its storied history.

Havana Club Anejo Clasico : Our Personal Take

We picked this up as a paired match with the two bottles of Havana Club Anejo Clasico and the Havana Club Anejo Blanco packaged together. The Anejo Clasico has a heavy nose on it, one that might frighten away sippers looking to dip their toes into sipping rums, but once you allow the rum to breathe, the fruity aromas really take hold and come to the forefront.

It sips nicely, although we preferred it over ice as the strong throat was just a bit too harsh for an enjoyable repeat sipping and two ice cubes solved that problem nicely. The fruit notes were pleasant, but not strong. The finish was strong, but not pleasant. As a sipping rum, Havana Club Anejo Clasico is just about as centered as you can get.

Rum Reviewer’s Final Thoughts

Heavy of the Caribbean fruits and a touch of sweetness to smooth out the finish, Havana Club Anejo Clasico brings a great sipping rum to the table for those who want a strong sipper with a mellow burn. This rum won’t set the world on its ear, but it is a solid bottle of rum to enjoy.
